Roundtable Dialogue on Reimagining the Indo-Pacific: Using an Inclusive Lens | 28 May 2024
In partnership with the Federal Foreign Office of Germany, Kubernein Initiative hosted a closed-door roundtable discussion on opportunities to apply an inclusive lens to the Indo-Pacific region, in Berlin, Germany, on 28 May 2024. Through the dialogue, participants discussed diverse thematic and country perspectives on human security in the Indo-Pacific, covering areas such as climate, trade, securitisation, human security, and intersecting themes.
H.E. Harish Parvathaneni, Ambassador of India to Germany and Michael Scharfschwerdt, Director, Policy Planning, Federal Foreign Office of Germany opened the roundtable discussion and gave special remarks. They launched our newest policy brief, Reimagining the Indo-Pacific Using an Inclusive Lens: Towards Gender Intentional Trade. Ambassador Gesa Braeutigam, Special Envoy for Feminist Foreign Policy and Director for Human Rights, German Foreign Ministry also launched our Podcast, Reimagining the Indo-Pacific, which brings together perspectives and offers a deep dive into varied emerging security challenges in the Indo-Pacific region. Our episodes covers themes of trade, climate change, digitalisation, multilateralism, and focus on opportunities for Germany and India to work together in safeguarding human security in the Indo-Pacific.
The aim of the roundtable and project was to explore ways forward for shaping more inclusive policies within the region and learn from best practices, particularly relevant to Indo-German engagement, and align and integrate regional perspectives within the Indo-Pacific discourse. The outcomes from this event will contribute to our joint project on deepening Indo-German cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, using an inclusionary lens and is especially timely in light of the upcoming Indo-German Government Consultations scheduled for the Fall of 2024. This approach bridges Germany’s ‘Feminist Foreign Policy’ vision with principles of inclusive foreign policy from an Indian perspective, incorporating Germany’s approaches to the Indo-Pacific and India’s view of the region.
Following the Roundtable, HE Ambassador Harish hosted the delegates of the roundtable and other dignitaries from Berlin at a reception at the Embassy of India in Germany.
Participants at the roundtable were from a cross-cutting spectrum including members of the Federal Government of German, experts who work on the India-Germany relationship, German Foreign and Security policy experts, representatives from leading think tanks and academic institutions and representatives from other Indo-Pacific countries.
